About Grünerløkka

A former working-class factory quarter along the Akerselva river, reinvented as one of Oslo's liveliest neighbourhoods of cafes, galleries and green squares, with a food hall at its edge.

Grünerløkka is a borough of Oslo on the east side of the Akerselva river, incorporated into the city, then Christiania, in 1858. It is named after Friedrich Grüner (1628-1674), a master of the Christiania mint who acquired the King's Mill and surrounding land in 1672. From the mid-nineteenth century the area industrialised, its factories drawing power from the Akerselva, and a sailcloth factory opened in 1856. It grew into a densely built working-class district, the local Paulus parish rising from about 13,600 residents in 1866 to some 22,000 by 1900.

Much of the area was developed from 1861 by the businessman Thorvald Meyer, after whom the main street, Thorvald Meyers gate, is named. Since the late twentieth century Grünerløkka has gentrified into one of Oslo's trendiest neighbourhoods, with cafes, bars and galleries, and squares and parks including Olaf Ryes plass, Birkelunden and Sofienberg Park. A riverside path follows the Akerselva past restored industrial buildings and waterfalls, and the former Vulkan site now hosts the Mathallen food hall.

Did you know? Grünerløkka is named after Friedrich Grüner, a seventeenth-century master of the Christiania mint, who bought the King's Mill and the surrounding land in 1672, long before factories and tenements filled the area.
