About Ancient Sparta: Acropolis and Theatre
The acropolis of ancient Sparta, a low hill among olive trees at the edge of the modern town, with a large Roman-era theatre, the site of the temple of Athena Chalkioikos and views of the Taygetos.
Classical Sparta built few grand monuments, so most of the stone seen today is Hellenistic and Roman. The theatre, built in its main form around 30 to 20 BC, held about 16,000 people. Above it stood the sanctuary of Athena of the Bronze House, and nearby are a round building of unknown use, an early Byzantine basilica and late Roman walls.
The site is an open park among olive trees, reached on foot from the town. From November it closes in the afternoon. Parts of the theatre may be fenced for restoration, and the ground is uneven, with little shade.
