About Monemvasia Causeway and Gate
The causeway to Monemvasia, a narrow link of about 400 metres from the mainland to the great rock, leading to the single gate that gave the town its name.
The rock is a tied island, joined to the coast by a natural sand bar about 400 metres long. Part of it was cut in 1890 for boats and bridged, and a road link followed in 1971. At the end of the road, the west gate in the walls is the main way into the lower town.
The causeway is open at all times and free. Cars cannot enter the walls, so park on the mainland or near the bridge and walk. The road has little shade in summer.
