About Vathia

Vathia, a hilltop village of stone tower houses near the southern tip of the Mani, built by rival clans in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and now almost empty.

First mentioned in 1571, Vathia grew into a village of fortified clan compounds, with tall towers, houses, family churches and graves. A clan war divided it for some forty years from 1764. Most buildings date from 1840 to 1900. The village was largely abandoned after the Second World War and is now a protected traditional settlement.

Vathia has no gate or opening hours; most towers are private or ruined, so look from the lanes and do not enter ruins. It lies about seven kilometres north of Cape Tainaron.

Did you know? Vathia in the Mani is first mentioned in 1571; in 1700 a census counted 54 families and 212 people in the village.
