About Monemvasia Upper Town and Agia Sofia
The upper town of Monemvasia, the ruined fortress town on the plateau of the rock, reached by a steep path, with the twelfth-century church of Agia Sofia on the edge of the cliff.
Once the main town on the rock, the upper town was abandoned after the Venetian period of 1690 to 1715. A winding path climbs from the lower town to its gate. On the cliff edge stands Agia Sofia, built around 1150 and first dedicated to the Virgin Hodegetria; it served as a mosque and as a Catholic church before it received its present name after 1821.
The climb takes about half an hour, on steep steps that can be slippery, with little shade. The church does not always keep regular hours, and from November the day ends earlier. Avoid the climb in rain or strong wind.
