About Monemvasia Lower Town

The lower town of Monemvasia, a walled stone town hidden on the sea side of a great rock off the Peloponnese, with cobbled lanes, Byzantine churches and no cars inside its gate.

Founded in the sixth century, Monemvasia grew rich in Byzantine times on the sea trade and passed between Franks, Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans. Its name means single entrance. Within the walls stand the church of Elkomenos Christos, Panagia Chrysafitissa and a former mosque that houses the archaeological collection.

The town is lived in and open at all times, with steps and no cars. Park on the mainland and walk or take a shuttle over the causeway. The archaeological collection is closed on Tuesdays, and many shops and hotels close out of season.

Did you know? The name Monemvasia comes from the Greek words moni and emvasis, meaning single entrance; the rock is joined to the mainland by a causeway.
