About Peribleptos and Hodegetria, Mystras
Two churches of Mystras: the Peribleptos, built against a cliff and painted around 1360 with some of the most important late Byzantine frescoes, and the five-domed Hodegetria of about 1310.
The Peribleptos, probably founded by the first despot Manuel Kantakouzenos and his wife Isabella de Lusignan, keeps a rare cycle of wall paintings of about 1360. The Hodegetria, or Afentiko, built around 1310 to 1320 for the Brontochion monastery, was the first church of Mystras with the full mixed plan; only fragments of its paintings survive.
The two churches lie about 500 metres apart, on opposite sides of the lower town, and both are in the site ticket. The interiors are dim, and the paths have steps.
