About Metropolis of Mystras (Agios Dimitrios)

The Metropolis of Mystras, the cathedral of Saint Demetrius by the lower gate, built after 1262, with frescoes, a courtyard, a double-headed eagle in its floor and the site museum.

Founded in the decades after 1262 as the seat of the bishop, the church began as a three-aisled basilica; in the fifteenth century an upper floor with five domes was added. Its walls carry paintings of three periods, and the old bishop's buildings around the courtyard house the Archaeological Museum of Mystras, founded in 1952.

It is a working church that still holds services, so dress modestly and keep quiet. It is included in the site ticket. The feast of Saint Demetrius is on 26 October.

Did you know? The Metropolis of Mystras, dedicated to Saint Demetrius, was founded after 1262, when the bishop of Lacedaemonia moved his seat here from Sparta.
