About Castle of Mystras

The castle on the summit of Mystras, built in 1249 by the Frankish prince William II of Villehardouin, with walls and towers and wide views over Sparta, Mount Parnon and the Taygetos.

William II of Villehardouin, the Frankish prince of Achaea, built the fortress in 1249 on a hill of about 620 metres. After his capture in battle in 1259 he gave it to the Byzantines in 1262, and the town grew on the slope below. The walls seen today mix Frankish, Byzantine and Ottoman work.

The path from the upper gate is steep, uneven and has little shade, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water. From November the site closes in the afternoon, so start the climb early.
