About Palace of the Despots, Mystras
The Palace of the Despots at Mystras, the seat of the Byzantine rulers of the Morea, with a great throne hall, restored after decades of work and reopened to visitors in May 2026.
The L-shaped palace grew in stages, from an early block probably built by the Franks before 1262 to the three-storey wing of the fifteenth century, with its Throne Hall of 36 by 10 metres. It is one of the few Byzantine palaces to survive. After restoration, it reopened in May 2026 with new exhibitions on court life.
One ticket covers the whole site of Mystras and its museum. From November the site closes in the afternoon. The way up from the lower gate is steep; a lift vehicle for visitors with disabilities can be arranged ahead.
