About Pantanassa Monastery, Mystras
The Pantanassa at Mystras, a convent founded in 1428 and still home to nuns, with a carved facade, a tall bell tower, fifteenth-century frescoes and a view over the Eurotas valley.
Founded in 1428 by Ioannis Frangopoulos, chief minister of the Despotate, it is called the last Byzantine church built at Mystras. Like the Hodegetria, it is a basilica below and a five-domed church above, and its galleries keep frescoes of about 1430. It is the only monastery on the hill that is still lived in.
It is a working convent: dress modestly, with covered shoulders and knees, speak quietly and keep out of private areas. It lies on the steep path of the lower town, near the Peribleptos.
