About Trümmelbach Falls

Ten waterfalls that pound through a twisting gorge in the wall of the Lauterbrunnen valley, most of them hidden inside the mountain, carrying meltwater from the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

The Trümmelbach Falls are a chain of ten waterfalls in a narrow gorge between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg. The stream drains the glacier walls of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, a catchment of about 23 square kilometres, roughly half of it ice and snow, and drops about 140 metres from the highest fall to the lowest. Apart from the lowest fall, the water runs hidden inside the mountain.

Steps and bridges first opened the lower falls to visitors in 1877. A tunnel lift and the upper falls followed in 1913, and the lift in use today dates from 1983. A route of about 600 metres, with galleries, bridges and tunnels lit by floodlights, leads past each fall. At its peak, after snowmelt or a summer storm, the stream carries up to 20,000 litres a second; on frosty autumn nights the flow falls to a few dozen litres. The falls are in Switzerland's federal inventory of landscapes of national importance and lie inside the Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage area.

Did you know? The name Trümmelbach comes from Trommelbach, meaning drum stream. It describes the sound of the water pounding inside the rock, not its look, and you hear it well before you reach the entrance.
