About Kleine Scheidegg
A mountain pass at 2,061 metres facing the Eiger north face, where the rack railways from Wengen and Grindelwald meet and the Jungfrau Railway begins its climb into the mountain.
Kleine Scheidegg is a pass at 2,061 metres between the Eiger and the Lauberhorn, on the watershed between the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald valleys. Before tourism, local people drove cattle and carried dairy goods over it; the first inns opened in the 1830s and 1840s, and the Hotel Bellevue des Alpes has been run by one family for generations.
The Wengernalp Railway reached the pass in 1893; it is about 19 kilometres long, and its operator calls it the longest continuous rack railway in the world. In 1896 work began on the Jungfrau Railway, which starts here and climbs inside the Eiger and the Mönch. From the station, the Eiger north face rises almost 1,800 metres, and since the 1930s climbers and onlookers have watched it from here.
Did you know? The Wengernalp Railway, about 19 kilometres long, runs from Lauterbrunnen over Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald. Its operator calls it the longest continuous rack and pinion railway in the world.
