About Grindelwald First and the Cliff Walk
A ridge at about 2,166 metres above Grindelwald, reached by a 25-minute gondola, with the Cliff Walk, a steel walkway and platform built along the rock face high above the valley.
First is a ridge north of Grindelwald, at about 2,166 metres, facing the Wetterhorn, the Schreckhorn and the Eiger. A chairlift first reached it in 1947; the present six-seat gondola replaced it in 1991 and climbs 1,105 metres in about 25 minutes, via Bort and Schreckfeld.
The First Cliff Walk, opened in 2015 and sponsored by a watchmaker, runs along the rock face beside the top station and ends in a platform that juts 45 metres out into the air. In summer, rides such as the First Flyer, a zip line down to Schreckfeld, and mountain carts and scooters take you back down the slope. First is also the start of the walk to the Bachalpsee.
