About Grindelwald Glacier Gorge
A deep, narrow gorge above Grindelwald, shaped by the Lower Grindelwald Glacier and its river, with a walkway of about a kilometre through galleries and tunnels and a net hanging over the water.
The Grindelwald Glacier Gorge, the Gletscherschlucht, was carved by the Lower Grindelwald Glacier, which once pushed through it to the valley floor, and by the Weisse Lütschine, the river that still runs through it. During the Little Ice Age the glacier advanced so far that part of the village had to move around 1600; after a last high point in 1855 it retreated, and by about 1875 it had left the lower gorge.
The first wooden boardwalks were laid in 1875, and the walkway of roughly a kilometre, through rock galleries and tunnels, was finished in 1958. In 2016 the gorge was renovated with themed areas and the Spiderweb, a net of 170 square metres hung over the river. The gorge is open from about May to mid-November, depending on snow and weather.
Did you know? From 1863 until 1914, a company cut blocks of ice from the tongue of the Lower Grindelwald Glacier and shipped them to Interlaken and as far as Paris.
