About Eiger Trail

A mountain path of about six kilometres along the foot of the Eiger north face, from Eigergletscher station down to Alpiglen, past streams and pastures below one of the most famous walls in climbing.

The Eiger Trail runs about 6.1 kilometres from the Eigergletscher station at 2,320 metres to Alpiglen at about 1,616 metres, a descent of nearly 780 metres in about two hours. It is a marked mountain path rated moderate, with no need for ropes, and it follows the steep pastures and scree below the north face of the Eiger.

The Eiger is 3,967 metres high, and its north face rises nearly 1,800 metres. The face was first climbed in July 1938 by Anderl Heckmair, Ludwig Vörg, Heinrich Harrer and Fritz Kasparek, after attempts in 1935 and 1936 had cost six climbers their lives; more than 60 people have died on it since 1935. The trail is open in summer, usually from about June or July, and closes with snow in autumn.

Did you know? From Eigergletscher to Alpiglen, the Eiger Trail climbs only about 80 metres and descends nearly 780 metres over 6.1 kilometres, so most walkers take it in that direction, in about two hours.
