About Bachalpsee
A mountain lake at about 2,265 metres, an hour's walk from First, where on a calm morning the water mirrors the Schreckhorn and the Finsteraarhorn above the Grindelwald valley.
The Bachalpsee, also called the Bachsee, lies at about 2,265 metres north of Grindelwald, in a moorland of national importance. It covers about eight hectares and is split by a natural dam into two parts, the smaller one several metres lower. Across the water rise the Schreckhorn, at 4,078 metres the highest peak entirely in the canton of Bern, the Finsteraarhorn and, to the west, the Wetterhorn.
The path from the First gondola station is about 3.3 kilometres, with one short steep climb, and takes less than an hour each way. From the lake, the Milibach stream falls over the Bachläger waterfall towards the Black Lütschine. The path continues to the Faulhorn and on to Schynige Platte, one of the classic hikes of the Bernese Oberland.
Did you know? The Bachalpsee is split by a natural dam into two lakes. The smaller part lies several metres lower than the larger one, and the Milibach stream flows out over the Bachläger waterfall.
