About Grindelwald Village, Church and Museum
The mountain village below the Eiger and the Wetterhorn, with a Reformed church of 1793 to 1795 and a local museum that tells how a farming community became a holiday resort.
Grindelwald lies at about 1,034 metres at the foot of the Eiger and the Wetterhorn. It is first mentioned in 1146, when King Conrad III granted estates here to the monastery of Interlaken, and the name probably comes from Old High German words for a barrier and a forest. Bern brought the Reformation to the valley in 1528. On 18 August 1892, a fire driven by the foehn wind destroyed 116 buildings in two hours.
The Reformed church at the eastern end of the village was built in 1793 to 1795, keeping parts of an older church, and its painted ceiling and pulpit date from 1908. Next to it, the Grindelwald Museum, run by the local heritage society, shows farm life, winter sports, mountaineering, railways and mountain painting on three floors. Tourism began in the 18th century; the first hotel opened in 1820 and the first winter season followed in 1888.
Did you know? The church tower clock of Grindelwald was made in 1767 with only an hour hand. The minute hand was added almost two centuries later, in 1957.
