About Männlichen and the Royal Walk
A grassy ridge at about 2,340 metres between Wengen and Grindelwald, reached by cable car or gondola, where a short walk to the summit opens a view over two valleys to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
The Männlichen is a ridge in the Bernese Alps between the Lauterbrunnen valley and Grindelwald. The top stations of the cable car from Wengen and the gondola from Grindelwald stand at about 2,220 metres; from there the Royal Walk, about one kilometre each way, climbs to the summit at about 2,340 metres, which the operator presents as a crown viewpoint.
The Wengen cable car opened in 1954 and climbs 947 metres in under five minutes; since 2018 its cabins have had an open roof balcony in summer. The Grindelwald gondola opened in 1978 and, at more than six kilometres, was then called the longest in the world; a new gondola from the Grindelwald Terminal has run since 2019. From the top, the Panorama Trail leads in about an hour and twenty minutes to Kleine Scheidegg.
Did you know? The Grindelwald-Männlichen gondola, opened in 1978, was more than six kilometres long and was then described as the longest passenger gondola in the world. A new ten-person gondola replaced it in December 2019.
