About Gimmelwald
A small car-free Walser village on a terrace between Stechelberg and Mürren, with hay meadows, old timber houses and a protected townscape, linked to the valley by cable car only since 1967.
Gimmelwald lies at about 1,365 metres on a ledge of the Lauterbrunnen valley, between Stechelberg on the valley floor and Mürren above. It is a Walser settlement, first named in a deed of 1346 that already mentions settlers from the Lötschental, and its oldest house is said to date from 1658. Its townscape is listed in the federal inventory of Swiss heritage sites worth protecting.
Until the Schilthorn cableway opened in 1967, the only way in was on foot. About 130 people live here, mostly from hay farming, small herds of cows and tourism; in winter many farmers work for the cableway. When the new Stechelberg-Mürren cable car opened in 2024 and bypassed the village, the operator agreed to keep the old line through Gimmelwald running at least until 2035.
Did you know? A deed of sale from 1346 is the first record of Gimmelwald, and it already mentions settlers from the Lötschental. The oldest house in the village is said to date from 1658.
