About Mürren
A car-free Walser village on a cliff terrace about 800 metres above the Lauterbrunnen valley floor, facing the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and an early home of British downhill skiing.
Mürren sits at about 1,640 metres on a terrace on the west side of the Lauterbrunnen valley, roughly 800 metres above the valley floor and opposite the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. First recorded in 1257, it was probably a summer pasture until settlers from the Lötschental arrived shortly after 1300. About 430 people live here all year, and no public road reaches the village.
The first hotel opened in 1857, an Anglican church for British guests followed in 1878, and the mountain railway from Lauterbrunnen in 1891. British visitors started winter sports here in 1911; Arnold Lunn and eight other skiers founded the Kandahar Ski Club in Mürren in 1924, and the Inferno race has run from near the Schilthorn since 1928. Today you arrive by cable car and train via Grütschalp, or by cable car from Stechelberg.
Did you know? Mürren is a Walser village: its first settlers came from the Lötschental shortly after 1300. Before them, the terrace was probably just a summer pasture, first named in 1257 as mons Murren.
