About Schilthorn and Piz Gloria
A 2,970-metre summit above Mürren, crowned by the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant from the 1969 James Bond film, with the Birg Thrill Walk on the cliff below and views to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
The Schilthorn rises to 2,970 metres above the upper Lauterbrunnen valley. From the summit the view takes in the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and, in good weather, reaches the Jura, the Vosges and the Black Forest. The revolving restaurant Piz Gloria, built from 1963 to 1968 to designs by the Bern architect Konrad Wolf, turns slowly on two rings around a fixed core.
When money ran short, the producers of On Her Majesty's Secret Service paid to finish the summit building in return for filming rights; filming ran from October 1968 to May 1969, and a Bond exhibition has been on the summit since 2013. Below the top, at the Birg station, the Thrill Walk runs about 200 metres along the cliff on steel and glass. The new Schilthornbahn 20XX cableway, finished in April 2026, runs from Stechelberg to the summit in about 22 minutes.
Did you know? The Bond film producers paid to finish the summit building and the revolving restaurant in return for filming rights. Filming on the Schilthorn ran from 21 October 1968 to 17 May 1969.
