About Uspenski Cathedral
On a rocky knoll above the harbour stands Helsinki's Orthodox cathedral, a red-brick pile of golden onion domes, said to be the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe.
Uspenski Cathedral (Uspenskin katedraali) is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral on the Katajanokka peninsula and the main cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Finland. It is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God; the name comes from the Old Church Slavonic uspenie, meaning falling-asleep. The Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev designed it in the Russian Revival style, and it was built between 1862 and 1868, consecrated in October 1868 after his death. Red brick and golden onion cupolas rise from a rocky hillside above the South Harbour.
Some 700,000 bricks were reportedly barged over from the ruined Bomarsund Fortress in the Aland Islands. The iconostasis was painted by Pavel Shiltsov. It falls under the Helsinki Diocese of the Finnish Orthodox Church and draws roughly half a million visitors a year. As of 2025 it is normally closed on Mondays and charges a small admission fee, around five euros for adults, outside service times.
Did you know? By tradition, roughly 700,000 of the cathedral's bricks were barged north from the ruined Bomarsund Fortress in the Aland Islands; the figure is widely repeated but best treated as approximate.
