About Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church)

A Lutheran church blasted straight into Helsinki's bedrock in the late 1960s, its rough rock walls and floating copper dome giving it the acoustics that concert audiences prize.

Temppeliaukio Church, also known as the Rock Church, is a Lutheran church in the Toolo district of Helsinki, excavated and built directly into solid bedrock. It was designed by the Finnish architect brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, who won the competition for the site in 1961; ground was broken in 1968 and the church was consecrated in 1969. The sanctuary walls are the rough, largely unworked rock faces left by the excavation, and the space is roofed by a shallow copper dome ringed with glazed skylights that admit natural light.

The church seats around 750 people and belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, serving as a parish church for the Toolo congregation. Its acoustics, shaped by the rough stone surfaces, have made it a popular concert venue, and its organ, built by Veikko Virtanen, has 43 stops and 3,001 pipes. Plans for a church on this square date back to the 1930s, before the post-war competition won by the Suomalainen brothers.

Did you know? The Suomalainen brothers' winning idea was not to build upward but to dig in: crews blasted the sanctuary out of the hill's granite, leaving the raw rock as the finished interior walls.
