About Kamppi Chapel of Silence
A smooth wooden Chapel of Silence on one of Helsinki's busiest squares, offering not services but a quiet, non-denominational room where anyone can step in and simply sit.
The Kamppi Chapel, known as the Chapel of Silence, is a small non-denominational chapel on Narinkka Square in the busy Kamppi district of Helsinki. Designed by the Finnish firm K2S Architects, it was built for the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 programme and opened in 2012. Its curved, vessel-like exterior is clad in sawn spruce planks joined with horizontal finger joints and treated with a pigmented wax, while the curved interior walls are lined with thick oiled alder. The chapel stands about 11.5 metres tall.
Rather than hosting regular services, the chapel is intended as a quiet place for calm and reflection, open to visitors regardless of religion or background. It is operated jointly by the Helsinki Parish Union and the City of Helsinki's Social Services Department, and visitors enter through an adjoining low building that also houses staff facilities. The design received an International Architecture Award in 2010, and the chapel drew about half a million visitors within its first two years.
Did you know? A common mix-up calls it an alder chapel, but that is backwards: the curved outer shell is waxed spruce, and it is the interior walls that are lined with thick, oiled alder planks.
