About Old Market Hall

Behind a red-brick front by the harbour, Helsinki's oldest indoor market hall has sold fish, cheese, pastries and bowls of salmon soup along its cast-iron aisles since 1889.

The Old Market Hall (Vanha kauppahalli) is an indoor market hall on the Eteläranta quay beside Market Square, in Helsinki's Kaartinkaupunki district. It opened in 1889, to a design by the architect Gustaf Nystrom, and is the oldest indoor market hall in the city. The building is of red brick around an internal cast-iron frame, and is described as the first indoor market hall in all of Finland.

When it opened it held 120 stalls and six shops in its central gallery, licensed to sell meat, eggs, butter, cheese and garden produce. Nystrom had studied how larger European cities built their market halls, and his design later served as a model elsewhere in the Russian Empire. A major building-services renovation between 2012 and 2014 closed the hall for about eighteen months. Today its stalls and small cafes sell Finnish specialities such as fish, cheeses, pastries and salmon soup.

Did you know? The facade carries the date 1888, a year before the hall actually opened: the launch was planned for 1888 but slipped to 1889, and the already-carved stone was simply left in place.
