About Senate Square

Helsinki's oldest square is a full-blown neoclassical stage set, where a white cathedral, the old Senate and the university face each other across a sea of granite cobbles.

Senate Square (Senaatintori) is the oldest part of central Helsinki and the heart of Carl Ludvig Engel's neoclassical city. Designated the main square in Johan Albrecht Ehrenström's 1812 plan, after Helsinki became capital of the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland, it was built up between roughly 1817 and the 1850s. Helsinki Cathedral crowns the north side from its flight of steps; the Government Palace of 1822, once home to the Senate of Finland, stands to the east; and the University of Helsinki main building of 1832 faces it from the west. The 1757 Sederholm House, the oldest building in the centre, sits at the southeast corner.

A bronze statue of Emperor Alexander II, erected in 1894, stands at the centre, surrounded by allegorical figures of Law, Culture, Peace and Labour. The granite-paved square regularly hosts concerts, large public events and the Lux Helsinki light festival.

Did you know? Tucked at the square's southeast corner, the Sederholm House dates from 1757 and is the oldest building in central Helsinki, older than the neoclassical grandeur that grew up around it decades later.
