About Market Square (Kauppatori)
Helsinki's open-air market meets the sea here, where stalls sell berries, fish and fried meat pastries, ferries leave for the island fortress, and bold seagulls patrol for dropped lunches.
Market Square (Kauppatori) is a central open-air market at the South Harbour, where Esplanadi meets the Baltic waterfront. From spring to autumn its stalls sell fresh Finnish produce, fish, berries, souvenirs and food such as fried lihapiirakka meat pastries. The Havis Amanda fountain by Ville Vallgren stands at the square's western edge, and the Stone of the Empress, an 1835 red-granite obelisk by Engel, is the oldest public memorial in Helsinki.
The square hosts the annual Baltic Herring Market each October. A year-round HSL ferry runs from here to the Suomenlinna sea fortress, and the square is bordered by the City Hall and the Presidential Palace. Long the ceremonial arrival point for state visits, including Queen Elizabeth II by royal yacht in 1976 and 1994, it also holds a monthly display of vintage American cars. Aggressive seagulls are a well-known hazard around the food stalls.
Did you know? The Stone of the Empress, a red-granite obelisk by Engel raised in 1835, is the oldest public memorial in Helsinki; it marks the first visit of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna in 1833.
