About Esplanadi

Helsinki's favourite promenade is a leafy strip between two streets, running from the shops down to the harbour, with a poet's statue at its heart and a summer stage.

Esplanadi is a park and promenade in central Helsinki, running between Erottaja and Market Square. It opened in 1818 to a design by Carl Ludvig Engel and is flanked by two streets, Pohjoisesplanadi to the north and Etelaesplanadi to the south. Locals call it Espa, and it is a popular walking and lunch spot known for frequent street performances and its Espa summer stage.

At the centre stands the statue of Johan Ludvig Runeberg, Finland's national poet, sculpted by his son Walter Runeberg and unveiled in 1885 as the first public monument erected in Helsinki; its pedestal features the Maiden of Finland. Restaurant Kappeli, at the Market Square end, opened in 1867 and was a favourite haunt of Jean Sibelius, Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Eino Leino. The Swedish Theatre closes the western end, where Engel's earlier theatre once stood, and the park holds further sculptures along its walks.

Did you know? Unveiled in 1885, the Runeberg statue was the first public monument raised in Helsinki; the poet's own son, Walter Runeberg, sculpted it, and its pedestal carries the Maiden of Finland.
