About Helsinki Cathedral

Helsinki's white neoclassical signature, this Lutheran cathedral rides a hill of steps above Senate Square; its green dome and ring of smaller ones are visible clear across the harbour.

Helsinki Cathedral (Helsingin tuomiokirkko) is the Evangelical Lutheran cathedral of the Diocese of Helsinki and the crowning element of Carl Ludvig Engel's Senate Square. Built between 1830 and 1852, it was completed after Engel's death in 1840. Until Finland's independence in 1917 it was known as St Nicholas' Church, named for Tsar Nicholas I and the patron saint of sailors. The building follows a Greek-cross plan with four colonnaded arms. Engel's assistant Ernst Lohrmann later altered the scheme, adding four smaller domes around the tall central one and two flanking structures.

Zinc statues of the Twelve Apostles, cast in Berlin and installed in 1849, stand along the roofline. The altarpiece was painted by Carl Timoleon von Neff and donated by Nicholas I. The church seats around 1,300 people, and a crypt below, added during 20th-century renovations, hosts exhibitions and events. It is one of the city's most visited landmarks.

Did you know? For its first sixty-five years the cathedral was called St Nicholas' Church, after Tsar Nicholas I and the patron saint of sailors; it took the name Helsinki Cathedral only after independence in 1917.
