About Ateneum Art Museum

The classic-art wing of the Finnish National Gallery, in an ornate 1887 building facing the railway station, holding Finland's Golden Age masters and an early, celebrated Van Gogh.

The Ateneum is one of the three museums that make up the Finnish National Gallery and holds what the gallery describes as the largest collection of classic art in Finland. Designed by the architect Theodor Hoijer and completed in 1887, its ornate facade carries sculptures by Carl Eneas Sjostrand and sixteen medallion reliefs by Ville Vallgren. It stands on the south side of Rautatientori, opposite Helsinki Central Station.

The collection spans Finnish art from the 18th century to the 1970s and includes more than 4,300 paintings and over 750 sculptures, with highlights by Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Helene Schjerfbeck. It also holds Vincent van Gogh's 'Street in Auvers-sur-Oise' (1890), acquired in 1903, which the museum describes as one of the earliest public-collection acquisitions of the artist, along with works by Cezanne and Munch. The Ateneum is central to the story of the Golden Age of Finnish art.

Did you know? The Ateneum's Van Gogh, 'Street in Auvers-sur-Oise', entered the collection in 1903; the museum calls it one of the earliest public acquisitions of the artist anywhere, though historians debate the exact claim.
