About Helsinki City Museum
A free museum on the corner of Senate Square, set in a block of old houses, telling the everyday history of Helsinki through more than a million photographs.
The Helsinki City Museum (Helsingin kaupunginmuseo) documents the history of the Finnish capital and traces its origins to 1911. Its main site stands at Aleksanterinkatu 16, on the corner of Senate Square, and admission is always free. The current museum was created in a 2016 revamp that joined five buildings in one block, dating from the 1750s to the 1920s; the oldest is the Sederholm House, completed in 1757 and the oldest stone building in central Helsinki.
The museum focuses on everyday life in Helsinki and holds more than a million photographs and roughly 450,000 objects. Children's Town, an interactive exhibition for families, occupies the Sederholm House, while the former Time Machine exhibit has closed and been replaced by The Helsinki Exhibition, opened in June 2026. Named Finnish Museum of the Year in 2017, it recorded 330,312 visits in 2025, the second-highest of any Finnish museum, and has a shop and cafe on site.
Did you know? Entry is always free, and the museum fills a block of five houses built between the 1750s and 1920s; the oldest, the 1757 Sederholm House, is central Helsinki's oldest stone building.
