About Seurasaari Open-Air Museum

An island museum of some eighty-seven old wooden buildings brought from across Finland, open mainly in summer, while the wooded island itself stays open to walkers all year.

The Seurasaari Open-Air Museum occupies the wooded island of Seurasaari, just northwest of central Helsinki and reached by a wooden footbridge. Founded in 1909 by the ethnographer A.O. Heikel (1851-1924), it preserves rural Finnish building traditions by relocating old, mainly wooden buildings from around the country and reassembling them on the island. The collection comprises about eighty-seven structures, including farmsteads, cottages, a parsonage and storehouses.

The oldest building is Karuna Church, built in 1685-1686 for Baron Arvid Horn at Sauvo and moved to Seurasaari in 1912. The museum, operated by the National Museum of Finland under the Finnish Heritage Agency, illustrates 18th-, 19th- and early 20th-century rural life and opens mainly in the summer season. The island itself, known for its almost tame red squirrels and a well-known Midsummer bonfire, remains a freely accessible recreation area year-round.

Did you know? Every building here was relocated: dismantled somewhere in rural Finland, transported to the island, and rebuilt. The collection numbers around eighty-seven structures, from farmsteads and cottages to a parsonage and slender storehouses.
