About Sibelius Monument

Eila Hiltunen's monument to composer Jean Sibelius, a walk-under cluster of some six hundred welded steel pipes whose abstract form sparked such an uproar that a portrait was added nearby.

The Sibelius Monument stands in Sibelius Park in the Toolo district of Helsinki and honours the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). Designed by the sculptor Eila Hiltunen and unveiled on 7 September 1967, the work is titled Passio Musicae and grew out of a monument competition held in 1961-1962. Its main element is an abstract cluster of welded, acid-resistant steel pipes, weighing about twenty-four tonnes, beneath which visitors can walk.

The abstract design provoked fierce public opposition, with critics comparing it to organ pipes or a heap of tin. As a concession, a separate figurative relief of the composer's face was added a short distance away. Hiltunen developed a personal welding technique to build the sculpture over several years. The monument is one of Helsinki's most visited public sculptures; later full-size versions were installed elsewhere, including at UNESCO in Paris, but the Helsinki work is the original.

Did you know? When the abstract steel monument was unveiled in 1967, the outcry was loud enough that a realistic bronze portrait of Sibelius was added nearby to satisfy critics who wanted a recognisable likeness.
