About Kallio Church

Lars Sonck's granite-clad church of 1912 crowns a hill above the Kallio district; twice a day its bells ring a short melody written by Jean Sibelius.

Kallio Church (Kallion kirkko) is a Lutheran church that dominates the skyline of Helsinki's Kallio district from a hill north of the centre. Designed by the architect Lars Sonck in a National Romantic style with Art Nouveau (Jugend) influences, it had its foundation stone laid in 1908 and was consecrated on 1 September 1912 by Bishop Herman Rabergh. Its load-bearing walls are brick, clad on the outside in Finnish grey granite.

The tower rises about 65 metres, and the top of its cross stands roughly 94 metres above sea level, at the northern end of a long straight street axis from the city centre. The granite tower houses seven bronze bells cast in Germany, which play a short melody attributed to Jean Sibelius twice daily. The hall church seats around 1,100 worshippers, is admired for its acoustics and used as a concert venue, and gained an interior columbarium in 1991.

Did you know? Although it looks like solid stone, Kallio Church has brick load-bearing walls faced with Finnish grey granite. The tower rises about sixty-five metres, and its cross reaches roughly ninety-four metres above sea level.
