About Kaivopuisto
A seaside park in southern Helsinki, laid out as a fashionable spa in the 1830s and now a favourite for shoreline walks, summer concerts and the huge May Day picnic.
Kaivopuisto is a large seaside park in southern Helsinki, bordering the Gulf of Finland and covering roughly 0.45 square kilometres. Widely described as one of the city's oldest and best-known parks, it was developed as a spa resort in the 1830s. Its Kaivohuone building dates from that decade, beginning as the spa's well-house before later becoming a restaurant and nightclub. The park still shows traces of stone fortifications built in the 18th century.
Kaivopuisto houses the Mannerheim Museum and the Ursa Observatory, while Villa Kleineh is described as the oldest villa in the area. The surrounding district is a diplomatic quarter, with the residences of several foreign ambassadors. A shoreline promenade looks out over islands and passing ferries at the mouth of Helsinki's harbour. On May Day (Vappu, 1 May) tens of thousands of people gather to picnic and celebrate, and open-air summer concerts have been held in the park regularly since the mid-1970s.
Did you know? Kaivopuisto was laid out in the 1830s as a fashionable European-style spa to draw wealthy visitors. The trade faded by the late nineteenth century, and the grounds became a public park.
