About Suomenlinna Sea Fortress

A UNESCO-listed sea fortress spread across eight islands, begun by Sweden in 1748, still home to around 900 residents, and reached by a short public ferry from the Market Square.

Suomenlinna is a sea fortress built across a group of islands at the entrance to Helsinki's harbour, roughly four kilometres southeast of the city centre. Construction began in 1748, while Finland was part of the Kingdom of Sweden, under the name Sveaborg (Viapori in Finnish). The Swedish admiral Augustin Ehrensvard directed the early work, though the design evolved over decades under later engineers. In May 1808 the fortress surrendered to Russian forces, and Finland was ceded to Russia the following year. The islands took the Finnish name Suomenlinna in 1918.

Spread over eight islands, six of them fortified, and covering about eighty hectares, Suomenlinna was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. It remains a living neighbourhood of some nine hundred residents, with around three hundred and fifty people working there year-round. A public ferry links the islands to the Market Square throughout the year.

Did you know? The ferry to Suomenlinna leaves from Helsinki's Market Square and runs year-round; for the islanders it is an ordinary commuter service, so your sightseeing boat is also somebody's ride home from work.
