About Amos Rex

A contemporary art museum whose galleries hide underground beneath a Helsinki square, lit by humped domed skylights that double as a walkable plaza above; it opened in 2018.

Amos Rex is an art museum in central Helsinki that opened on 30 August 2018. Its main exhibition galleries lie underground, dug out beneath Lasipalatsi Square on Mannerheimintie, while curved domed skylights bubble up through the surface of the square, lighting the galleries below and forming a walkable, sculptural plaza. The museum and its underground extension were designed by the Finnish firm JKMM Architects. It occupies the functionalist Lasipalatsi ('Glass Palace'), completed in 1936, which also contains the Bio Rex cinema.

The museum is the successor to the Amos Anderson Art Museum, which operated from 1965 to 2017, and is named after the publisher and arts patron Amos Anderson (1878-1961); it is funded by the foundation Foreningen Konstsamfundet, which Anderson established in 1940. Its opening exhibition was the Japanese collective teamLab's immersive 'Massless'. Amos Rex draws roughly 250,000 visitors a year, recording 228,303 in 2024, and ranks among Finland's most-visited museums.

Did you know? Rather than build upward, JKMM Architects dug the galleries beneath Lasipalatsi Square and let curved domed skylights rise through the paving, creating a plaza that people climb and sit on above the art.
