High on the Salzberg above Hallstatt, reached by the Salzbergbahn funicular, Salzwelten Hallstatt is the oldest known salt mine in the world. People have worked this mountain for salt for roughly seven thousand years, from Neolithic diggers with antler picks to the organised Bronze Age and Iron Age shafts whose profits built the culture that took the village's name. Salt is still mined in the wider Salzberg today.
The guided show-mine sends visitors down miners' slides, across an underground salt lake and out on a small mine train. Its treasure is a Bronze Age wooden staircase felled in 1344 BC, the oldest known in Europe, presented as a careful reconstruction while the original timbers are conserved in Vienna.
