About World Heritage Museum Hallstatt

The village museum walking visitors through seven thousand years of salt, the prehistoric cemetery on the mountain, and the Iron-Age culture that took its name from Hallstatt itself.

The Welterbemuseum, or World Heritage Museum, stands in the centre of Hallstatt near the market square. In its current multimedia form since 2002, it traces roughly seven thousand years of local history: salt mining, the great prehistoric cemetery, and the Iron-Age Hallstatt culture to which the village gave its name. The eponymous Hallstatt culture describes the early Iron Age across much of Central Europe, dated to about 800 to 450 BC.

The museum's core comes from the cemetery on the Salzberg above the village, where salt-mine official Johann Georg Ramsauer began systematic excavation in 1846, recording roughly a thousand graves in meticulous watercolour plates. In total the burial ground has yielded well over a thousand graves. Many of the richest originals are held by the Natural History Museum in Vienna, so the village displays a mix of genuine finds, replicas and reconstructions. A monument to Ramsauer stands outside.

Did you know? The village is so archaeologically important that an entire era took its name: the “Hallstatt culture” describes the early Iron Age across much of Central Europe, roughly 800 to 450 BC.
