The Hallstätter See lies in the heart of the Salzkammergut in Upper Austria, fed and drained by the river Traun and cradled at about 508 metres among mountains that plunge straight to the waterline. It stretches roughly 7.75 kilometres from end to end yet stays narrow, reaching a maximum depth of about 125 metres. Contrary to a persistent local boast, it is not Austria's deepest lake; the nearby Traunsee is considerably deeper.
The village of Hallstatt occupies a thin ledge along the steep western shore, while the Salzkammergut railway, opened in 1877, runs along the far side, leaving its station marooned across the water. A small electric passenger ferry has bridged that gap since 1881, meeting the trains. Petrol motorboats are banned, so rowing craft and quiet electric launches rule the surface. The whole basin forms part of the UNESCO-listed Hallstatt-Dachstein Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape.
