About Vorderer Gosausee
At the foot of the Dachstein near Gosau, this dammed alpine lake mirrors the mountain and its glacier, the largest of three Gosau lakes, circled by an easy shoreline path.
The Vorderer Gosausee is the largest and most accessible of the three Gosau lakes, lying in the municipality of Gosau at the foot of the Dachstein, around 933 metres above sea level. A nearly flat path rings the shore in about an hour. Though it looks pristine, it is in fact a reservoir: dammed in the early twentieth century for a hydroelectric scheme, its level was raised by some twelve metres and is drawn down for power, so shoreline and depth shift with the seasons.
The classic view looks south-east down the water to the Hoher Dachstein, 2,995 metres, and its glacier, with the jagged Gosaukamm ridge to the north; on calm, full days the massif mirrors perfectly. The water is very clear and cold, open to swimming, diving and fishing. The lake lies within the UNESCO Hallstatt-Dachstein Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape.
