High in the Dachstein above Obertraun, a show cave where seepage water freezes in place year-round, its floodlit ice halls named for Parsifal, King Arthur, and Tristan of legend.
The Dachstein Giant Ice Cave lies within the Dachstein massif above Obertraun, its entrance at around 1,450 metres on the south-eastern flank of the Hallstätter See. Visitors ride the Krippenstein cable car to the Schönbergalm, near 1,345 metres, then walk uphill to the mouth. Inside, temperatures hover around freezing all year, so the ice is perennial, reaching more than twenty metres thick in places. It is not a glacier and not frozen lake water; it forms as meltwater and seepage freeze inside the cold cave.
The decisive exploration came in 1910, when Georg Lahner and Hermann and Hanna Bock descended the interior ice chasm; the cave opened to visitors in 1912. Its floodlit chambers carry theatrical names such as the Parsifal Dome and King Arthur's Dome. Despite the drama, it is not the world's largest ice cave, and tours run only from spring to autumn.
