The Evangelical Church of Christ, or Christuskirche, is the lakeside Lutheran church whose slender neo-Gothic spire anchors the world-famous Hallstatt panorama. Despite its medieval-looking Gothic Revival styling, it was built in the early 1860s and consecrated in 1863, on a prominent site at the water's edge only a few steps from the market square.
Its origins reach back to the sixteenth century, when Reformation teaching spread among the Salzkammergut salt miners but was long suppressed. The Edict of Toleration of 1781 allowed a modest prayer house, and the Protestant Patent of 1861 granted full legal equality, finally permitting a proper church. It is frequently mistaken for the Catholic parish church, which in fact stands higher up on the hillside; the celebrated postcard spire belongs to the Protestants. Today the church holds services and summer concerts.
