About Market Square (Marktplatz)
Hallstatt's intimate central square, ringed by pastel merchants' houses and centred on the Baroque Holy Trinity Column, rebuilt after a devastating fire swept through the village in 1750.
The Marktplatz is the small central square of Hallstatt, ringed by tall pastel merchants' houses and documented in its present layout since the fourteenth century. At its heart rises the Holy Trinity Column, carved from Untersberg marble by the Salzburg sculptor Joseph Anton Pfaffinger and erected in 1744 at the expense of Johann Ignaz Etzinger, a wealthy local salt merchant. A late-Baroque Trinity column, its triangular plan deliberately mirrors the shape of the square.
Despite its timeless appearance, the square is not an untouched medieval survival. A great fire in 1750, said to have begun in a baker's attic, destroyed much of the centre, and the houses were substantially rebuilt afterwards. The whole village lies within the UNESCO-listed Salzkammergut cultural landscape, though Hallstatt's prehistoric fame belongs to the Iron Age salt mines above the town rather than to this Baroque square.
