About Städel and the Museumsufer

The Städel, the art museum on the south bank in Frankfurt, founded by the will of the banker Johann Friedrich Städel in 1815, with seven centuries of European art, among the museums of the Museumsufer.

The collection holds about 3,100 paintings, from Botticelli and Vermeer to Rembrandt and modern art, in a building of 1878 with later extensions, among them underground halls of 2012 lit by round skylights in the lawn. Along the Schaumainkai stand eight more museums, of sculpture, applied art, film, architecture and world cultures.

The Städel is closed on Mondays and needs a ticket; on Tuesday afternoons a cheaper ticket is offered. The other museums keep their own hours and prices. On the last weekend of August, the Museumsufer festival fills the river bank.
