About Eiserner Steg
The Eiserner Steg, the footbridge of 1869 over the Main between the old town and Sachsenhausen, rebuilt several times, with a Greek line from Homer and wide views of the skyline.
Citizens built the first bridge with their own money, because the old stone bridge was then the only way across the river, and walkers paid a small toll until 1886. The present steel bridge dates from 1911 and 1912. Blown up at the end of the Second World War, it was rebuilt in 1946 and raised in 1969 and 1993.
The bridge is free and open at all times, and two lifts make it step-free. Come at sunset or after dark, when the steelwork is lit and the skyline shines across the water.
Did you know? The Eiserner Steg in Frankfurt was paid for by citizens through a bridge association, and walkers paid a small toll to cross it until 1886.
