About Goethe House
The Goethe House in Frankfurt, where the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in 1749 and grew up, rebuilt after its destruction in 1944, with the German Romantic Museum next door.
Goethe lived here until 1775, when he left for Weimar. In 1863 the house became the first public memorial to the poet. Destroyed in an air raid in March 1944, it was rebuilt true to the original from 1947 and reopened in 1951. Its rooms show how a wealthy Frankfurt family lived in the eighteenth century.
The house is open every day, including Mondays, and tickets are sold only at the door. One ticket covers the house and the German Romantic Museum next door. Guided tours in German run in the afternoon.
Did you know? Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born on 28 August 1749 in the house on the Großer Hirschgraben in Frankfurt, and he lived there until 1775.
