About Römerberg and Römer
The Römerberg, the old central square of Frankfurt, with the stepped gables of the Römer, the city's town hall since 1405, the Fountain of Justice and a row of rebuilt half-timbered houses.
The council bought the house Zum Römer in 1405 and made it its seat; over time the town hall grew to eleven houses. Upstairs, the Kaisersaal held the banquets after the coronations of emperors, and portraits of the emperors line its walls. The square was almost totally destroyed in 1944; the Römer was rebuilt behind its old fronts, and the half-timbered east row was reconstructed in the early 1980s.
The square is open at all times. The Kaisersaal can usually be visited when no event is held, so ask at the tourist information. In the weeks before Christmas, the Christmas market fills the square.
Did you know? The Römer has been the town hall of Frankfurt since 11 March 1405, when the city council bought the houses Zum Römer and Zum Goldenen Schwan.
