About Sachsenhausen
Sachsenhausen, the district on the south bank of the Main in Frankfurt, with the cobbled lanes of its old quarter and the taverns where apple wine is poured from grey stoneware jugs.
Sachsenhausen has belonged to Frankfurt since the Middle Ages, and part of its old quarter survived the war. In the lanes around the Große and Kleine Rittergasse and along the Schweizer Straße, taverns serve Apfelwein, a tart, still apple wine, in ribbed glasses, with local dishes such as Handkäse with onions and green sauce.
The streets are open at all times; many taverns open only in the afternoon or evening, and some close one day a week. The old Ebbelwei-Expreß tram runs only at weekends and on holidays.
Did you know? The people of Frankfurt call Sachsenhausen Dribbdebach, over the water, and their own north bank of the Main Hibbdebach, this side of the water.
